What does your entryway say? Make it a sophisticated statement with this taping technique. Adding a graphic focal point is a great way to add style to an entryway and all you need is tape and paint. Start by painting the rectangle that's the backdrop of the design, and let that dry for 12 to 24 hours. Once it's dried, mask the rectangle using delicate surface painters tape with edge lock, which helps prevent bleeding. Make sure to mask right onto the rectangle or the measurements in the directions will be off. First, divide the space into three columns by adding two full-length verticals of tape. Now, divide those columns with a series of horizontal pieces to create cells. Divide up those cells. Working from top to bottom, left to right add horizontals. Focusing on the center column and working from top to bottom, add two verticals. Then add a series of alternating horizontals, and another series of alternating verticals - and that's the final pattern for the center. Finally, finish the outer columns. Starting with the left side, add three short verticals in the top cell, in the middle, and in the bottom cell. Repeat the same pattern in the right-hand column. In the large open cells, create x's with two pieces of tape. Then, divide each quadrant of the x working your way around clockwise. Before you start painting, be sure to burnish the edges of the tape to get a tight seal to the surface which will save a lot of touch-up time. Paint the whole design. When you can, it's best to brush from the tape toward the center of the space so you don't push paint up under the tape. Once dry, peel up the tape to reveal a great graphic look that will give an entryway or any space something distinctive to say.
