As the weather begins to cool off, closing a pool properly will make opening it next season much easier if you live in colder climates. To begin, prep the water and mechanical system for the winter. The necessary tools needed are a skimmer, a brush, vacuum, test strips, total alkalinity increaser, ph increaser and decreaser, calcium hardness increaser, chlorine stabilizer, granular chlorine, algaecide, scale metal and stain control and pool antifreeze. To begin, test the pH balance, water hardness and alkalinity levels in the water with water test strips. Having the proper water levels will help the water to not become too corrosive while the pool is closed. Next, check the chlorine level. Make sure the chlorine is at proper levels. Remove, clean and store the ladders, diving board and other pool accessories. Now to close the pool. Skim, brush and vacuum the pool one more time. Clean the skimmer baskets and remove contents. Add a scale, metal and stain control to the pool along with a granular chlorine and let the chemicals circulate for 6 hours. Add algaecide after and let that circulate for 4 hours. Lower the pools water level about 1-6 inches below the water skimmer. Remove directional fillings and add freeze plugs. Shut off the filter pump, drain equipment and store accordingly. For much cooler regions, add a pool antifreeze. Finally, cover and secure around the edges, and you are done.
